How to Use the Typing Test

1
Choose your difficulty and duration

Select Easy, Medium, or Hard to control the complexity of the passage vocabulary. Then pick a test length: 1 minute for a quick check, 2 minutes for a standard test, or 3 minutes for a more thorough measurement.

2
Start the test

Click the "Start Test" button, click anywhere on the passage, or press Enter. The timer begins the moment you start typing your first character. A blinking cursor shows your current position in the passage.

3
Type the passage exactly as shown

Type the words you see on screen as quickly and accurately as you can. Correct characters turn green; mistakes turn red. The live stats bar updates your WPM, accuracy, errors, and time remaining in real time.

4
Review your results

When the timer runs out (or you finish the passage), your full results appear: final WPM, accuracy percentage, correct characters, total errors, and time used — along with a performance rating.

5
Restart and improve

Hit Restart to try again with a fresh passage. Consistent daily practice of even 5–10 minutes is the fastest way to improve your typing speed and accuracy over time.

Pro Tip:

Focus on accuracy before speed. Typing slowly but correctly builds better muscle memory than typing fast with lots of errors. Once your accuracy is consistently above 95%, speed will follow naturally.

About the Typing Test

Wordstopia's Free Typing Test is a browser-based tool that measures your typing speed in words per minute (WPM) and your accuracy as a percentage. It uses a character-by-character comparison system that highlights correct keystrokes in green and errors in red, giving you instant visual feedback as you type.

WPM is calculated using the standard formula: every 5 characters (including spaces) typed correctly counts as one word. This is the same method used by professional typing certification tests and most major typing platforms. The accuracy percentage reflects how many of your keystrokes were correct out of the total keystrokes attempted.

The test offers three difficulty levels — Easy uses simple, everyday vocabulary; Medium uses a mix of common and less frequent words; Hard uses complex vocabulary, punctuation-heavy sentences, and longer words that challenge even experienced typists. All passages are carefully selected to provide a fair and representative sample of real writing.

The average adult types between 40 and 60 WPM. Professionals like data entry clerks, transcriptionists, and executive assistants typically type between 65 and 90 WPM. If you practise regularly with this tool, you can expect meaningful speed and accuracy gains within just a few weeks.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is WPM calculated?

WPM (words per minute) is calculated using the standard 5-character formula: the total number of correctly typed characters is divided by 5 (to convert characters into "words"), then divided by the elapsed time in minutes. This is the industry-standard method used by most typing tests and certification programs worldwide.

What is a good typing speed?

The average person types between 40 and 60 WPM. Anything above 60 WPM is considered above average. Most office and administrative roles expect 60–80 WPM. Professional typists, transcriptionists, and coders typically reach 80–100 WPM. Competitive typists can exceed 120 WPM. The most important thing, however, is accuracy — a high WPM with low accuracy produces more errors that need fixing.

Does capitalisation and punctuation matter?

Yes. The test requires you to type each character exactly as shown, including capital letters, commas, periods, apostrophes, and other punctuation. This matches real-world typing conditions and is why the Hard difficulty — which uses more punctuation-heavy passages — is more challenging than Easy.

What is the difference between Easy, Medium, and Hard?

Easy passages use simple, short, everyday words that are familiar to most readers. Medium passages introduce longer words and more varied sentence structures. Hard passages include complex vocabulary, technical terms, and heavier punctuation — designed to challenge experienced typists and more accurately reflect professional-level writing.

Can I retake the test with a new passage each time?

Yes. Every time you click Restart or change a setting, a new passage is loaded from our passage library at random. This prevents memorization from inflating your score and gives you a more accurate picture of your real typing speed.

Does the test work on mobile and tablets?

Yes, the test works on mobile and tablet devices with a hardware keyboard connected. Because on-screen virtual keyboards include auto-correct, auto-capitalisation, and predictive text features that would interfere with the test, we recommend using a physical keyboard for the most accurate results.

How can I improve my typing speed?

The most effective ways to improve typing speed are: (1) practise touch typing — keeping all fingers on the home row keys and never looking at the keyboard; (2) start slowly and prioritise accuracy over speed; (3) practise for at least 10–15 minutes daily; (4) use all fingers rather than just index fingers; and (5) take this test regularly to track your progress. Most people see significant improvement within 2–4 weeks of consistent practice.
